As a child, he was interested in American football. He served as a quarterback for the Elks as well as for the Ohio State football team. He was also named the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year when he was in his senior year. He joined Ohio State University in 1989 and there he played as a quarterback for the next four years. He began his broadcasting career on ESPN and that was from the College GameDay set. He also joined The Sporting News as a columnist in 1997.
