Aaliyah was on her way to the United States from the Bahamas on 25th August 2001 after filming for a music video. However, not long after the plane took off, it crashed killing other eight people on board with Aaliyah.

The reason behind the plane crash was the fact that the aircraft was overloaded and because of the severity of the accident, Aaliyah's body's remains were returned to the United States only three days later.

Her funeral took place on 31st August 2001 in Manhattan and later it was revealed that Aaliyah received a blow to the head and had severe burns. The investigators explained that even if she had survived the plane crash, she would not recover from the trauma.
