“There is no perfect balance.” This is what Kristie Johnson had to say when asked about the task of managing her personal and private affairs. In this competitive journalism field, having the nickname as ‘First on the Scene’ is quite an accomplishment. And such a nickname cannot be achieved without making some grave compromises.
“I balance it by making adjustments on a daily basis. There is no perfect balance! You can have a string of 4 days where you’re like “Yup, I got this!” and suddenly you get a call as soon as you walk into the office and it’s your daughter crying because some girl hurt her feelings. You think to yourselves “Okay, I have a deadline and need to be prepared, but my daughter needs me right now.””
Maybe all this would not have been possible if her husband wasn’t supportive enough. She has been married to Steve Johnson for quite some time now. The couple has two children together, a daughter and a younger son.
Having to work from 4pm to 11pm, she said how hard it was to spend quality time with her family. Her work demands a no-break policy. She gets to sleep a maximum of 5 hours because she has to get up early to prepare her children for school. She could obviously ask her husband to cook the meals so she can get a few more hours of sleep. But that would mean sacrificing time together with her children. Focusing a little more on your career than your family might be an invitation to divorce as has been the case with many so far. So Kristie has learned the hard way to make things work.
Born on June 5, 1972, in the Philippines, she is the daughter of a Filipina mother and a Swedish American father. Kristie has been serving as a co-anchor at WCBS-TV in New York City on the 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts.
