On 26th of June 1964, Smith got married to Cecilia Souza. Cecilia Souza is a lovely lady. As a loving husband and wife, they welcomed two children together. However, this married life was not meant forever as they got divorced in 1974.

In the early 1980s, he appeared in the movies and TV shows like Going Berserk, Blue Thunder, Staying Alive, Renegades, The A-Team and so on. He got his rise in fame in the mid 1980s after he starred the role of Clarence Boddicker in an American cyberpunk action film RoboCop.
