Leonard began his acting career when he was 8. At a young age, he began performing in children’s and Neighborhood Theater. Though both of his parents wanted him to study hard in college, he began pursuing his acting career and he finally made his professional acting debut in 1948 by starring the role of Ralphie in the drama series, Awake and Sing!. He also joined Boston College to study acting. He also worked at an ice cream parlor. In 1953, he joined the United States Army Reserve and served till 1955. During his departure from the United States Army Reserve, he was ranked a sergeant. In 1951, he appeared in the movie Queen for a Day where he played the role of Queen for a Day. During the mid-1950s, he also starred in TV series like Dragnet, The West Point Story, Highway Patrol, and many more. His breakthrough role came in 1979 after he portrayed the role of Spock in the science fiction film Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
