Diane Sawyer is a former member of U.S President Richard Nixon’s White House staff and present anchor of ABC News night flagship program ABC World News.
Early Life
Diane Sawyer was born as Lila Diane Sawyer on December 22, 1945, in Glasgow, Kentucky, the United States. She is the daughter of Jean W. Sawyer and Erbon Powers Sawyer.
Her father was an elementary school teacher while her mother was a judge. She attended Seneca High School in the Buechel area of Louisville where she worked as a chief editor for her school newspaper The Arrow.
She was raised along with her sister Linda Sawyer by their parents. She is of American nationality and belongs to white ethnicity.
Daine finished the first semester of law school at University of Louisville before receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, in 1967.
Career
Shortly after completing her graduation, Diane Sawyer returned to Kentucky to work as a weather forecaster for WLKY-TV in Louisville.
Later in 1970, she moved to Washington, D.C. but was unable to find a job as a broadcast journalist. Thereafter, she interviewed for a job in government offices and eventually served as an assistant to the White House deputy press secretary Jerry Warren.
In 1978, Diane started working as a general assignment reporter for CBS News and in February 1980, she was promoted to a political correspondent and appeared on the weekday broadcasts of Morning alongside Charles Kuralt.
In 1989, she joined ABC News and co-anchored Primetime Live newsmagazine along with Sam Donaldson. She co-anchored ABC's 20/20 from 1998 to 2000.
On January 18, 1999, Diane joined Good Morning America which she co-anchored with Charles Gibson.
ABC announced on June 25, 2014, that Diane Sawyer would be the anchor chair at ABC World News in September 2014 and she is still serving it.
Personal Life: Marriage & Death of her husband
Diane Sawyer is currently single but she previously was a married woman. She tied the knot with a versatile film and theatre director, producer, and actor Mike Nicholls on April 29, 1988.
The couple enjoyed a beautiful married life until her husband Mike died of a stroke on November 19, 2014. He was 83.
The pair didn't share any children together but Nichols had a son and two daughters from his previous marriages.
Likewise, prior to Diane's marriage with Nichols, she was in relationships with Frank Gannon, an aide to President Richard Nixon, and American diplomat Richard Holbrooke.
