Linda Ellerbee was born as Linda Jane Smith on August 15, 1944, in Bryan, Texas, the United States of America. She was raised there by her parents.

In 1982, Linda again worked with Dobyns as hosts of NBC News Overnight. Their trademark writing style made the show reminiscent of their stint on Weekend. She later co-hosted the show along with Bill Schechner.
Linda moved to rival network ABC in 1986 and served as a reporter for the morning show Good Morning America.
She co-wrote and co-anchored a weekly primetime historical series Our World along with Ray Gandolf at ABC, and she received an Emmy Award for her performance on that program.
Linda guest-appeared in an episode of the television sitcom Murphy Brown in 1989. An autobiography about her, And So It Goes, was published in 1986.
