Lucy married her spouse Alex Mackenzie Smith in 1988 but the couple divorced in 2004. She has a son who is diagnosed with autism. She is a trustee of the Autism Research Trust. She also works together with her father Stephen Hawking on his projects such as books designed through the background of adventure travels to give the explanation of difficult science to young readers.
She is of British nationality and English ethnicity. Lucy has published two novels: Jaded (2004) and Run for Your Life (2005). She has also published an adventure story, George's Secret Key to the Universe. She was a participant in NASA’s 50th birthday in April 2008 conversing on children and science education. She focuses on engaging children in science at an early age. For this effort, she was awarded the Sapio Prize in Rome in October 2008 for popularizing science.
She is the vice president of the National Star College. In 2010, she was appointed as writer-in-residence in Arizona State University of its 2011 Origins Project. Hawking spoke at the BrainSTEM: Your Future is Now festival at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada from 30 September 2013 to 30 October 2013.
