Maksim has never been married in his life but he has been engaged twice. After having romantic affairs with Karina Smirnoff for several months, they got engaged on 5th of January 2009. Karina Smirnoff is also a professional ballroom dancer. They called off this engagement at the end of that year.

He was just 4 when Maksim began dancing. At the age of 13, he had bad days in his life. He broke his leg in a skiing accident and he had to put a titanium rod in his leg. Doctors ordered him not to dance for several years but he quickly recovered and began dancing after six months. Later on he established himself as a professional Latin Ballroom dancer. In mid 1990s, he moved to United States with his parents, he also continued dancing there. In 2002, he partnered with Elena Grinenko and together they competed in the International Latin category. Once they were ranked 2nd in United States. They also achieved the position of 7th in the world among professional international Latin couples. In 2005, he became the Yankee Classic Professional Latin Champion. In the early 2006, he collaborated with an American actress and model Tia Carrere and together they appeared on the Season two of the Dancing with the Stars. The pair finished sixth place in their first session. In the 3rd session, he joined Willa Ford and in the 4th session he performed with Laila Ali. Though he reached the final round for four times before 2014, he didn't won this competition once. After two years of break, he made his comeback in the season 18th of the Dancing with the Stars. He partnered with professional ice dancer Meryl Davis and the pair were announced the winner of this show on 20th of May 2014. His net worth is $3 million.
