She was born September 27, 1960, in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico to a politician, sports leader, lawyer, and educator José Enrique Arrarás. She is one of the seven children born to her parents.
During her childhood days, she was also interested in swimming. She also used to participate in several swimming competitions. She won three medals at the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships and even qualified for the 1976 Summer Olympics but her illness became a barricade for her participation.
Later she attended the Loyola University of New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1978, where she majored in communications and public relations and graduated with honors 4 years later.

In 1986, Maria began her broadcasting career working as a news anchor and reporter at a local Puerto Rican television station, Channel 24. In 1987 the Univision affiliate in New York City hired her as its co-anchor followed by her recruitment as Los Angeles Bureau Chief.
After leaving Univision in 2002, Maria then worked for Telemundo where she became the host and Managing Editor of the show Al Rojo Vivo con Maria Celeste. Since 2002, Maria makes her guest appearance as a co-host of NBC’s Today show.
