Matthew was active as an actor since the mid-1960s. In 1966, he appeared in the Broadway Malcolm at the Shubert Theatre. He played the lead role in this Broadway show. Two years later he was seen at the Astor Place Theatre appearing in the play The Indian Wants the Bronx. In 1969, he made his feature film debut by starring in the role of Harvey Belman in an American comedy-drama film Me, Natalie. In early 2014, Matthew suffered a massive illness. He took care of his lovely wife and his daughters. He took his last breath on the 22nd of May 2014 and the reason for his death was congestive heart failure. His funeral was held at the end of May.
