Max was married man but it is unknown whom he was married to. He was also the father of the son named Shane Holley. Besides his son, there was no any information related to his love affairs, girlfriend, his loving wife and his divorce.
Max was active in broadcasting since the late 1950s. When he was 16, he worked at St. John's Evening Telegram as a sports director. During the early 1960s, he joined VOCM and CJCH in Halifax. In 1965, he joined CFRA radio as a parliamentary reporter. He also worked at CTV News as a reporter for several years. In 1972, he ran in an election as a Progressive Conservative but he lost this election to Don Jamieson. At the end of 2009, he revealed that he will retire as a news anchor within a year. In 2003, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and with an untreatable cancer in 2014. He died of cancer on 1st of October 2015. Before his death, his net worth and salary was high.
