Michelle Jacquet DeSevren Branch was born on July 2, 1983, in Sedona, Arizona. She is the daughter of David Branch who is an Irish and mother Peggy Branch of Dutch-Indonesian and French descent. She has an older brother named David and a sister named Nicole.
Michelle started singing at an early age of 3. She was enrolled at Northern Arizona University for voice lessons. She attended the Sedona Red Rock High School but was homeschooled for the last 2 years of her high school.

She self-produced her first album Broken Bracelet, in 2000 and contained songs that she had written when she was 14. The album was released under an independent record label.
Michelle was then signed to Maverick Records, where she produced her major-label debut, The Spirit Room. The album was certified Double Platinum by the RIAA.
In 2002, she collaborated with Santana, to produce The Game of Love, which won her a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. Michelle then released Hotel Paper in 2003, her second album, which contained the single Are You Happy Now also won her a Grammy nomination.
In 2005 she and her musician friend Jessica Harp collaborated to form The Wreckers. Together they released an album titled Stand Still, Look Pretty. They later split in 2007 to pursue their own solo careers. Her other album Hopeless Romantic was released in 2017.

About her personal life, Branch was married to Teddy Landau, her bass player in Mexico on May 23, 2004. Together they have a daughter named Owen.
The musical couple later divorced in 2015. After her divorce, she started dating Patrick Carney in 2015 and in February 2018, it was announced that she was expecting a baby with Patrick who was later born in August 2018.
