A Michigan boy, namely Michael Martin, committed suicide last month after being repeatedly bullied on his school bus, his mother confirmed to local news media.

According to the Lansing State Journal report, the 13-year-old boy died on January 25 at a hospital two days after he tried to kill himself at his home in Lansing. He was an eighth-grade student at Everett High School.

His mother, Joanna Wohlfert, told the paper, in the months leading to his death, Martin was tormented on the school bus for his weight, braces and glasses. Joanna said her son didn't go to school for 33 days since September because of being bullied.

Joanna told the newspaper she reached out to the Lansing School District and the bus company which gives services to the district, Dean Transportation. But both of them failed to investigate the bullying.

Joanna told the outlet,

I know that some schools are overwhelmed with kids, but if you have a parent that’s reaching out to you, and trying to get help for their child, why wouldn’t you reach back? Why wouldn’t you do something? He was going through a dark time and nobody cared. Nobody paid attention to him.

She added, "He was going through a dark time and nobody cared. Nobody paid attention to him.”

A spokesman for Lansing School District, Bob Kolt, told the Lansing State Journal on Friday, February 1, that school staff responded appropriately to the bullying reports.

As the district is investigating the boy’s death, Bob wouldn’t comment further over the incident.

Offering condolences to the family, the school bus company released a statement, saying it is in communication with the school district.

The bullying related to Michael’s death is under investigation.
