Mila J was born onn November 18, 1983, in Los Angeles, California to Karamo Chilombo and Christina Yamamoto. She grew up alongside her siblings Jhene Aiko, Jahi Chilombo, Miyagi Hasani Ayo Chilombo, and Miyoko Aminah-Khali. 

1991

Starred as a dancer

Mila managed to catch the attention of American record producer Chris Stokes. Through him in 1991, Mila starred as a dancer in Prince's "Diamonds and Pearls" video. 

1995

Released debut single

Mila joined the American R&B group Gyrl along with her sister Miyoko. In 1995, the group droped their first debut single "Play Another Slow Jam". It topped in number 74 int he US Hot R&b list staying in the chart for six weeks.

Mila J is a famous American singer, songwriter, rapper, and dancer known for appearing in Prince's video for Diamonds and Pearls. Mila has released several singles from 2006 to 2009 under her name Mila J.  She had signed with Motown from 2013 to 2017 and released two EPs, M.I.L.A. in 2014, 213 in 2016, and Dopamine and 11.18 in 2017. Mila was born as Jamila Akiko Aba Chilombo on November 18, 1983, and is 38 years old. She was born and brought up in Los Angeles, California to her mother Christina Yamamoto who is an art teacher, and her father Dr. Karamo Chilombo (born Gregory Wycliff Barnes) who is a musician and pediatrician alongside her sibling Jhene Aiko.

Mila's parents later got divorced and her fathers remarrying gave rise to Mila's number of siblings which includes her half-sisters Marcia, Dio, and Kareena. People often mistake her for her sister Jhene Aiko due to their uncanny resemblance. She is of American nationality and belongs to the black ethnicity.

Mila J's Career from 2006 to present

Mila J joined an up-and-coming dance group at the start of her career which brought her to the attention of Chris Stokes.

Mila then auditioned for and starred as a dancer in Prince's Diamonds and Pearls which was released in 1991 through Stokes. Mila alongside her sister Miyoko joined the American R&B group Gyrl.

While they were backup dancers, they appeared in several music videos including Da Munchies, Constantly, and also the remix of Constantly, and I Don't Mind. In 1995, Silas Records released Play Another Slow Jam, Gyrl's official debut single which peaked at number 74 in the US Hot R&B Singles staying on the chart for over six weeks.

Later in 1997, Gyrl released another single Get Your Groove On with new members Glorika "Jeanae" Briley and Tai-Amber Hoo. It was also featured in the movie B*A*P*S and peaked at number 91 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and 30 on the US Hot R&B Singles chart.

Mila then joined another girl group, Dame Four, alongside Tomasina Parrot, Tennille Mathis, and Mercedes Nelson and released the single How We Roll. However, they split up soon after that.

In 2006, Jamila also appeared on tracks by RaRa, IMx, and Omarion. Mila was set to release a solo album Split Personality however it was shelved.

In 2012, Mila changed her name and appearance to the rough-around-the-edges Japallonia released a mixtape for free download through Datpiff which was supported by a music video, Blinded. She also released a music video with VEVO, "Movin On."

On January 29, 2014, Mila J released her first single, Smoke, Drink, Break-Up, which premiered on BET's 106 & Park. Mila was also featured on Trey Songz's song Disrespectful and many other projects.

On August 27, Mila premiered her second single lyrical video, My Main, which featured Ty Dolla $ign, and was produced by DJ Mustard.
