Copeland learned Ballet with California ballet instructor Cindy Bradley, before attending the institution Copeland attended several classes as a spectator. Copeland won the first place in the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards at the Chandler Pavilion in March 1998 at the age of 15. She was awarded Scholarship between 500-2500 Dollars. She was mentioned as the best youth dance in the Greater LA Area by the Los Angeles Times after her victory in the 10th annual contest among gifted high school students in Southern California.

Copeland joined ABT's studio company in summer 2000 and became a member of its Corps de ballet in 2001 and she performed the Pas de Deux in Tchaikovsky's The sleeping Beauty as a part of this studio.

In August 2007, she was appointed as a soloist at ABT, she was one of the youngest dancers promoted to soloist.

She was approved for performances in Twyla Tharp's Baker's Dozen and Paul Taylor's company B during the 2008-09 season. She won the Leonora Annenberg Fellowship in Arts in2008. She began achieving solo roles in standard repertory ballets since 2012.

Besides a ballet dancer, she has also appeared in TV and films, written books and worked as a model.

Focusing on her personal life, she got married with her boyfriend Olu Evans on July 31, 2016 at an age of 34,in Laguna Beach, California. She lives on Manhattan's Upper West Side with her husband. She was in  affair with Evan since 2004 when Evan's cousin introduced them.

Copeland holds an American nationality and belongs to black ethnicity. Her estimated net worth is 500 thousand Dollars.
