In 1995 while Monica was working as a White House intern, she has sexual relationship with United States President Bill Clinton. From the end of 1995 to the start of 1997, she had sexual encounters with him for about nine times. This affair later emerged a controversy in the White House and the Bill Clinton accepted it as an inappropriate relationship but not a sexual relationship.
After the scandal, Monica became the focus of a political storm. English journalist, Andrew Morton began writing a book titled Monica's Story, she cooperated with him and this book was later released in March 1999. It was the bestselling book in the late 1990s and she earned $500,000 for her work in this book. That month, she appeared on ABC's 20/20 where she was interviewed by Barbara Walters. For her appearance in this show, she got $1 million from international rights. In May, she guest appeared in the show, Saturday Night Live. In May 2014, her essay titled Shame and Survival as published in Vanity Fair magazine.
