Neal Schon was born as Neal Joseph Schon on 27 February 1954, in Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, the United States. He was born to American parents father Matthew and mother Barbara Schon. He first picked up the guitar at "around the age of five, a quick learner.
As a talented teenager, he joined the Latin rock band, Santana, when he was just 15. He played an important in their third album, Santana III which was released in September 1971. Schon has said he was asked by Eric Clapton to join Derek and the Dominos, but that he joined Santana instead.
He was influenced by guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, and B.B King. He further joined the foined American rock band Journey in 1973, and their debut album, Journey was released on the 1st of April 1975.
During the late 1980s, he joined American/British hard rock supergroup Bad English and their self-titled debut album, Bad English was released on 26th of June 1989. chon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Journey on April 7, 2017.
