NFL Rookie Corey Ballentine Wounded, While a Friend Died in a Shootout

NFL's rookie for the New York Giants, Corey Ballentine was wounded in a reported shooting while his team-mate, Dwane Simmons was shot dead on 28th April 2019.

The shoot-out took place "off-campus" in Topeka, Kansas, early on 28th April, on Sunday.

Both the athletes played for Washburn Ichabods, however, Corey Ballentine had just been selected in the NFL draft.

Corey is said to be recovering.

Jerry Farley, the University's president said it was a "terrible way" to end the day that was supposed to be a "celebration".

Dr. Farley further added,

a day to look forward to Dwane's upcoming year at Washburn and the beginning of Corey's professional career

In a statement, the New York Giants said they were,

aware of the tragic situation and continue to gather information.

The giants also added,

We have spoken to Corey, and he is recovering in the hospital. Our thoughts are with Dwane Simmons' family, 

Washburn University further informed that Corey Ballentine's news conference of 3 pm (local time) has been postponed until further notice.

Head coach Craig Schurig said:

Dwane's infectious smile and love for football and his team-mates was truly inspirational.

May the departed soul rest in peace.
