Sir Patrick Stewart is an English actor. He has spent six decades in the film industry winning himself the Olivier, Golden Globe Emmy, Screen Actors Guild and Saturn Award, nominations. He has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2010, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to drama.

Early life And Career

Patrick Stewart was born on 13 July 1940, in Mirfield, West Riding of Yorkshire, England. So basically, he's of English nationality. His father Alfred Stewart was a regimental sergeant major in the British Army and his mother Gladys (nee Barrowclough).

He has two elder brothers, Geoffrey and Trevor. His parents had not given him a middle name, but he later used “Hewes” professionally back in 1980.

Patrick grew up in a poor family with domestic violence owing to his father’s background in political and ideological beliefs. He spent much of his early days in Jarrow.

He attended school at the Crowley Church of England Junior and Infants School. He thanks his English teacher Cecil Dormand for his effort to make him stand as an actor. He says that the teacher gave him a copy of Shakespeare and commanded him to get up on his feet and act.

 In 1951, after failing his eleven-plus examination, he entered Mirfield Secondary Modern School where he continued to study drama.

At 15, he left school and started his participation in local theatres and public shows. He also worked as a newspaper reporter and obituary writer at the Mirfield & District Reporter, but after a year, he was given an ultimatum to choose between journalism and acting. Later, Stewart got a chance to attend the Bristol Old Vic Theatre

Professional Career

He first started out as an actor for Manchester’s Library Theatre. He made his debut in January 1967. He played a fire officer’s role in Coronation Street.

Following his debut, Stewart was offered roles in several major television series, but none of these work gained prominence. Stewart preferred classical theatrical roles over other genres.

In 1987, Stewart agreed to work for Hollywood on reviving an old science-fiction television show. Stewart had no idea that he had been offered to star for Star Trek. In fact, he knew nothing about the original show or regarding its iconic status in American culture. He was more than willing to sign the contract for six years, hoping that the new show would fail to air after a few episodes and that he could quickly head back to his stage career back in London.

In Star Trek, he was picked to play Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Stewart unexpectedly earned lots of money because of the show’s success. Between 1994-2002, he portrayed Picard in films like Star Trek Generation (1994), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002); and in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s pilot episode “Emissary." Patrick still claims that  Star Trek completely changed his life.

After the immense success of Star Trek, he accepted a key role in another big-budget X-Men film series as Professor Charles Xavier, founder, and mentor of the superhero team, a role that in many ways was similar to Picard. Stewart has played the role in seven feature films. He finally announced his departure from the franchise after Logan, where he played the role of Professor Xavier for the final time.

In 2011, Patrick co-starred with William Shatner, in a feature-length documentary The Captains. In this documentary, Shatner interviews all the actors who were portrayed as captains in the Star Trek franchise.

He has more than 150 acting credits to his name, some of them include Hedda, Excalibur, Dune, Lifeforce, Lady Jane, L.A. Story, Death Train, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Gunmen, Jeffrey, Conspiracy Theory, Masterminds, Safe House, A Christmas Carol, King of Texas, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, TMNT, Hamlet, Match, Logan, and more.
