Later he got interested in vocal and became the lead vocalist of the local band The Roadrunners. He also sang for local bands like Micky Moody and Bruce Thomas.
He co-formed the English rock band Free in 1968 where he served as a lead singer and songwriter. Their debut album, Tons of Sobs was released on the 14th of March 1969.
Their second album, Free was released at the end of that year. Though they were one of the biggest-selling British blues-rock, this band disbanded in 1973 and then he formed the band Bad Company that year.
