He was one of the talented and successful Australian journalists and this has been proved from the several honors and awards that he has received in his life. In 2001, he won Centenary Medal. He has also been introduced into the Logie Hall of Fame in the early 2014.

He was living the healthy life till the early 2010s; however, at the end of 2012, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and it took his life on 2nd of March 2013. He underwent a medical treatment at North Shore Private Hospital in Sydney but he lost his life there.

Peter got married to love of his life Anne long time ago. He also became parents of two children from his lovely wife. During this long married life, there was not a single rumor of his extra affairs and their desire for getting divorced.

Peter was a strong believer of god and its follower. During his early days, he joined Sydney newspaper The Daily Telegraph and took his journalism cadetship. Prior to BBC Radio, he also worked at 2UE and 2GB. He is also known for his days in The Guardian and American Newsweek magazine. In the early 1970s, he became associated with Nine Network and began working there as its news director. He is also known for presenting its shows like Today and 60 Minutes. At the end of 2012, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and it took his life on 2nd of March 2013. The actual figure about his net worth and salary was unknown.
