Phil was born in Deer Lodge Montana in 1945 to father Charles and Mother Elisabeth Funk Jackson. His parents were Assembly members of God minister. Phil Jackson was raised by his parents together with two brothers and a half sister in a remote area of Montana where dancing and television is not allowed.

Jackson started his career as a basketball player from his college life. He was a member of the "Sigma Alpha Ellison Fraternity" where he played in the NCAA Division 2 tournament.
