As a child Randy joined Alderwood Middle School. There he began wrestling as an amateur player. Then he joined Lynnwood High School. He became the State Championship during his senior year. In 1982, he joined U.S. Army. While he was in army, he also wrestled a lot but was not sent to Greco-Roman tryouts. He served there till 1988 and then he began appearing in the Olympic team. He also reached the semifinal at the 2000 Olympic Trials and also became the runner-up at 190 pounds in 1992. In May 1997, he made his professional debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
