Ray Nagin was born as Clarence Ray Nagin, Jr. in the mid 1950s in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States of America in a middle class family. His mother was a manager in restaurant and his father was a fleet mechanic at a local dairy.

1978

Graduated from Tuskegee University

As a child, Ray was enrolled at St. Augustine High School and O. Perry Walker High School. With a baseball scholarship, he joined Tuskegee University with a major in Accounting. He finally earned his Bachelor of Science degree from there in 1978.

1981

Became Internal Audit Manager

After he earned his bachelor’s degree from Tuskegee University, he took several jobs like Internal Audit Manager, Division Controller jobs with Associates Corporation, controller and manager of Cox New Orleans. He also worked at General Motors in Detroit, Michigan.

1982

Married to Seletha Smith

In 1982, Ray got married to Seletha Smith. It’s been more than three decades they have been together as a loving wife and husband but till date there are no any rumors about their divorce. They have two sons named Jeremy Nagin and Jarin Nagin and one daughter named Tianna Nagin. 

1989

Became the vice-president and general manager of Cox Louisiana

In the mid 1980s, he joined Cox New Orleans, the city's cable television franchise as its controller. Within short time, he became the general manager and at the end of 1980s, he was named its vice-president and general manager.

1995

Won Role Model Award

He is the founder of 100 Black Men of America and he also served as its president for several years. In 1995, he was honored with one of the prestigious award and that was Young Leadership Council Diversity and Role Model Award.

Won New Orleans mayoral election

Despite being a Republican throughout his youth, he came out as a Democrat in with the turn of 21st century and ran in the 2002 New Orleans mayoral election. He won the 29% of the vote in the first round and 59% of the votes in the last round to become the 60th mayor of New Orleans.

May 20 , 2006

Won New Orleans mayoral election for the second time

After he won the election, New Orleans was listed in the comeback kids in the south. He made New Orleans a better place within short period of time. In the early 2006, he ran New Orleans mayoral election for the second time and he won the final round 52% to 48% with Mitch Landrieu.

Convicted of fraud and bribery

Ray Nagin is best known for being the 60th mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana. Within short time, he made New Orleans a better place and a popular place but Hurricane Katrina faded away all his popularity. In 2014, he was accused of bribery, fraud and money laundering. After that he was sentenced to prison for ten years.
