On 22nd of January 1945, Richard got married to Sheila Sim. Sheila Sim was also an actress. She starred in several movies and theater shows. As a married couple, they welcomed three children togehter. They were together for about seven decades. His nationality was English and he was of white ethnicity.
Richard was enrolled at Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys in Leicester. During the 2nd world war, he joined Royal Air Force and served at the newly formed R.A.F. Film Unit at Pinewood Studios. He served in the air force for about five years and his highest rank was AC. He worked in the film unit and damaged his ear permanently while he worked there. In 1942, he made his acting debut by starring in a British patriotic war film In Which We Serve. Next year he appeared in the movie Schweik's New Adventures. In the mid 1940s, he also starred in the movies like The Hundred Pound Window, Journey Together, A Matter of Life and Death, School for Secrets and so on. In 1960, he made his production debut by working in a black-and-white British drama film The Angry Silence as a producer. In 1961, he produced the movie Whistle Down the Wind. He made his directorial debut in 1969 by directing a musical film Oh! What a Lovely War. He was critically acclaimed for being the director and producer of an epic biographical film Gandhi. His net worth was $20 million.
Richard died at the age of 90. He lived in Beaver Lodge on Richmond Green with his wife and they left this house at the end of 2012 because of their bad health. He died on 24th of August 2014 in Denville Hall, Northwood, Hillingdon, London, England, UK. His beautiful wife Sheila Sim died in the early 2016.
