The Canadian professional ice hockey player Riley Sheahan currently plays as a center forwarder for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted 21st overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
Riley Sheahan was born as the son of Mike Sheahan and Peggy Sheahan on December 7, 1991, in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. He was brought up by his parents in his birthplace. He is a Canadian by nationality and belongs to the white ethnicity.
Sheahan started playing Junior B Ice Hockey for St. Catharines Falcons and made his debut in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League playing both center and wing. During his first season with the Falcons, Sheahan recorded 49 goals and 85 assists over two seasons.
Following the two seasons in St. Catharines, he went to play with the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) in NCAA Division I college ice hockey.
On April 5, 2012, Riley Sheahan made a three-year entry-level contract with Detroit Red Wings. On April 7, 2012, he made his NHL debut against the Chicago Blackhawks alongside Justin Abdelkader. On January 11, 2014, he scored his first career NHL goal against Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings. On July 1, 2014, he extended his contract with Detroit Red Wings for two-years at $1.9 million.
While playing for Detroit Red Wings, he made an NHL record as the only forward with at least 100 shots to start the season without a goal.
Later on October 21, 2017, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins, along with a fifth-round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, in exchange for Scott Wilson and a third-round pick in 2018.
