Roy Carroll came into the field of football through the youth team of Fivemiletown United. He also played for youth club Ballinamallard United.

As a trainee, Roy Carroll joined the professional team Hull City A.F.C. in 1995. After two years, he left the club after making 46 appearances for the team. He then signed a contract with Wigan Athletic, in 1997, with the transfer fee €525K and made his official debut for the club in November as a backup player for Lee Butler.

Carroll has so far played in 138 games for the team. Along with his team, he won the Football League Trophy in 1998.

Roy Carroll signed a new deal with Manchester United for €3 million in July 2001. Later, he gave his remarkable performance against Tottenham Hotspur. He became a part of the team that won Premier League (2002-03), FA Community (2003), and FA Cup (2003-04). Along with his teammates, Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Rio Ferdinand, etc. On May 2005, he was released after his contract expired.
