Rupi Kaur was born on October 5, 1992, in Punjab, India, to a Sikh family. Her family moved to Canada at the age of four along with her parents. While she was a child, her mother inspired her to draw and paint. During her childhood, she was unable to speak English as it wasn't her first language and because of that, she had to face problems in her school.
While she was studying at school, she used to write poems and messages to her friends and middle school crushes on their birthdays.
Rupi joined the University of Waterloo, Ontario, where she studied Rhetoric and Professional Writing. She moved to various places in Canada before settling in Brampton and currently, she lives in Toronto, Ontario.
Rupi first performed in the basement of the Punjabi Community Health Centre at Malton in 2009. Similarly, her outstanding work is her photo-essay on menstruation, describes as a piece of visual poetry intended to challenge societal menstrual taboos.
Later, Rupi started sharing her work through her own name Tumblr. She posted her writing to Instagram in 2014 and also added simple illustrations. Her writing is easy to understand for the reader, with simple drawings to elevate her words.
She is one of the popular authors like John Grisham and Kazuo Ishiguro; however, her first book Milk and Honey sold over million copies and became number one on the New York Times bestsellers list.
Rupi wrote her second book The Sun and Her Flowers, in July 2017 and it was released on October 3, 2017. The book contains five chapters including wilting, rooting, falling, blooming, and rising. It also contains numerous themes like loss, trauma, healing, femininity, migration, and revolution.
Rupi holds Canadian nationality and belongs to the Punjab descent. Currently, she is single and seems busy focusing on her career. She likes to keep her personal profile related to her boyfriend and affair far from the media. He has not been spotted with any boyfriend and she is yet to get married.
Being a writer, Rupi earns a huge amount of money from her professional career. Her self-published book Milk and Honey has sold more than half a million copies in the United States, from which she must have collected a decent amount. However, her current net worth and salary are yet to disclose and are under review.
