1959

Joined City News Bureau

After he dropped out from University of Chicago Law School he joined City News Bureau at the end of 1950s. There he worked as a police reporter and that was the beginning of his journalism career. 

1963

Was hired by Associated Press

In the early 1960s, he joined United Press International where he was named the correspondent in South Dekota. In 1963, he began working for the Associated Press where he was named a Chicago and Washington correspondent. 

1970

Won Pulitzer Prize

After spending some time in the 1968 presidential election as a press secretary for Eugene McCarthy, he began covering the Vietnam War as a freelance journalist. He investigated the Dispatch News Service and this won him his first Pulitzer Prize. 

1972

Was hired by The New York Times

In 1972, he joined The New York Times. There he worked as a reporter for the Washington bureau for about three years. He also worked in the same position at The New York Times in 1979.
