Seymour received his Masters degree in history from University of Chicago. Before he got enrolled at University of Chicago Law School, he worked at Walgreens. After he quit University of Chicago Law School because of his low grades, he joined City News Bureau in 1959. There he worked as a police reporter and that was the beginning of his journalism career. In the early 1960s, he joined United Press International where he was named the correspondent in South Dekota. In 1963, he began working for the Associated Press where he was named a Chicago and Washington correspondent. In 1972, he joined The New York Times. There he worked as a reporter for the Washington bureau for about three years. In 1983, he authored a book titled The Price of Power: Kissinger in the Nixon White House.
