Soledad O’Brien Mother Passes Away 40 Days After Father’s Death

Soledad O’Brien is mourning the death of her mother, Estela O’Brien, just 40 days after her father Edward O’Brien passed away.

The Matter of Fact host, 52, took to Twitter on Monday, March 18, to confirm the loss of her mom, with sharing heartfelt throwback photos of her late mom. The pictures she shared reflects on her life and legacy.

Alongside a picture of Estela staying at the Catholic Institute for women of color, she wrote,

She was a pretty remarkable lady. An immigrant from Cuba, she lived with the Oblate Sisters of Providence in Baltimore during college.

The Broadcast journalist noted that her mother "was sad about leaving Cuba" but "hated" how former leader Fidel Castro "destroyed her country.”

She ultimately moved to America for the educational purpose and later fell in love with scientist Edward O’Brien.

Through the tribute posts, Soledad praised her parents for valuing education and sending their children to college.

She wrote,

[My mom] was pretty awesome. But mostly I wish lots of young, working women had access to her wisdom. ‘Everyone gets the same 24 hours. Decide how you spend yours.’ ‘Take 24 hours to sit in bed and cry.. then stop complaining and make a list and plan your comeback

The television host’s dad, Edward, passed away in February. He was 85.
