He is one of the popular Greek actors. After being spotted by an Italian director Luchino Visconti in the late 1950s, Spiros was offered an acting role and he made his acting debut in 1959.

He got his rise in fame in 1960 after he portrayed the lead role in an Italian movie Rocco and His Brothers. That year he also appeared in the movies Run with the Devil and Messalina. Two years later, he starred in the movie A Man for Burning.
