Stellan started his career at the early age of 21 in Swedish Television and films. Stellan is recognized best, for his portrayal of Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who worked to save the Holocaust victims.
Stellan in his starting days was on good terms with director Lars von Trier and has appeared in six Danish auteur’s features like The Kingdom, Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, Dogville, Melancholia, and Nymphomaniac. He has a strong working relationship is with Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland, who directed Kjaerlighetens Kjotere, Aberdeen, In Order of Disappearance, and A Somewhat Gentle Man.

Later, Skarsgard was considered for the role of Oskar Schindler in Schindler’s List. Skarsgard played Dr. Erik Selvig in Marvel’s film Thor in 2011 and replayed the role in the sequel Thor: The Dark World, in 2013 too. In 2012, Stellan played the role in The Avengers and again in the 2015's sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Stella again teamed with the director of Thor and appeared as The Grand Duke in Cinderella in the movie 2015.
