Sterling Kelby Brown was born on April 5, 1976, in St. Louis, Missouri to father Sterling Brown Jr. and mother Aralean Banks Brown. He raised in his birthplace along with his two sisters and two brothers. While he was was 10 years old his father died.
Brown attended Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School. He joined Stanford University where he graduated in 1998 with an acting degree. He also attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts where he obtained his MFA.
