She was born in Tubingen, Baden-Wurttemberg, West Germany to parents Sung Jong-hyun and Seo Bok-im. Her father is professor and was studying in Germany while she was born. Her family returned back to South Korea when she was four years old. She is South Korean by her nationality.

1998

Began her Career

She began her career while she was in her high school in 1998 as the youngest member of the four-member K-pop girl group Fin.K.L which is one of the very first Korean idol groups. This group became popular after releasing their four albums.

2005

Graduated from Kyung Hee University

She graduated from popular university named Kyung Hee University in February 2005. She graduated with majoring in theatre and film. She also received an Achievement Award for promoting her alma mater.  She began her acting debut before her graduation.

2002

Her acting Debut

She stared her acting career in television series "Bad Girls" in the role of Han Yeol-mae in 2002.  In 2003 she appeared in her first leading role in "Thousands Years of Love" as the role of Princess Pueyeoju. She learned horseback riding and martial arts for her first lead role.

She won SBS Drama Awards in 2002 for "Bad Girls" in category of New Star Award. In 2003, she won for "Thousands Years of Love" in three different categories and again in 2013, she won in category of Excellence Award, Actress in a Miniseries for the series "The Secret of Birth".

Won MBC Drama Awards

She won MBC Drama Awards for two times till now. In 2006 she won that award for television series "One Fine Day" in the category of Special Award, Actress in a Miniseries and in 2012; she won for "Feast of the Gods" in the category of Top Excellence Award, Actress in a Special Project Drama.

2008

Nominated for 2nd Korea Drama Awards

She has been nominated for 2nd Korea Drama Awards in 2008. She was nominated for that prestigious award for television series "Hong Gil-dong" as the role of Heo Yi-nok and that was in the category of Excellence Award, Actress.

2006

Won KBS Drama Award

In 2006, she won that award for "The Snow Queen" in the category of Popularity Award, Actress and Best Couple Award with Hyun Bin and in 2008 she won for "Hong Gil-dong" in the category of Popularity Award, Actress and Best Couple Award with Kang Ji-hwan.
