Tadashi Shoji was born to Japanese parents on January 15, 1948, in Sendai, Japan. Since his childhood, he was interested in painting and drawing. Later, he went to Tokyo where he studied fine art.
Later in 1973, Shoji moved to the United States, where he joined Los Angeles Trade Technical College and studied fashion design. As a student, he also worked alongside Bill Whitten, who created designs for stars including Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Neil Diamond, and The Jacksons.

After completion of his graduation, Shoji began working as a designer for a clothing manufacturer. He worked there until he launched his own label, Tadashi Shoji, in 1982. He made his runway collection debut at the New York Fashion Week in September 2007.
He also worked as a sponsor for Miss Universe 2002-2007 Pageant for fabulous opening dresses. He also served evening wears for the winner of Miss Universe each year. His gown was also worn by Miss Universe 2007 Riyo Mori.
In April 2012, he formed an e-commerce website selling an edited collection of eveningwear and bridal gowns. In July 2012, he expanded his business internationally by opening boutiques in Shanghai and Beijing. He has also designed for Oscar Winner Octavia Spencer, Kate Beckinsale, Olympic gold medalist, Mirai Nagasu, and Oscar Winner Mo'Nique, Helen Mirren.
