Taraji P. Henson Reveals About Suffering Depression and Anxiety

Taraji P. Henson opened up during an interview with Variety that she is struggling with depression and anxiety.

The Baby Boy actress, 48, who founded Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation in the memory of her late father, Boris Henson, told the magazine, "I suffer from depression."

The organization eradicates the stigma around mental health issues in the African-American community.

Noting that she's never dealt with anxiety, she added, "My anxiety is kicking up even more every day."

The Empire star then revealed that she has regular appointments with a therapist, explaining,

That’s the only way I can get through it. You can talk to your friends, but you need a professional who can give you exercises. So that when you’re on the ledge, you have things to say to yourself that will get you off that ledge and past your weakest moments. It’s a professional — someone who studies the human mind, and someone who has no stakes involved.

She continued,

Their job is to make sure you’re mentally sound, whatever that is, and telling you the truth, which might hurt. Sometimes your friends don’t want to hurt your feelings. If I’m going to change for the better, I need honesty, and sometimes your friends and family don’t have it in them to be brutally honest.

As for what caused her to get into depression, she said that her celebrity status and the resulting lack of privacy impacted on her mental health.

Henson is not the only one who spoke about depression and anxiety in recent days. Rapper Big Sean, 31, shared an Instagram post on his 31st birthday (March 25) to open up about his mental health issues, telling fans that he is suffering depression and anxiety.

Henson's anxiety news comes less than a month after she became engaged to her boyfriend of four years, Kelvin Hayden.
