Sir Thomas Jones Woodward, widely known for his on-stage name Tom Jones, is a renowned singer from the United Kingdom. Jones has sold over 100 million records and has thirty-six Top 40 in the U.K. and nineteen in the U.S.A which includes It's Not Unusual, What's New Pussycat, Green, Green Grass of Home, She's a Lady, and many others as well.
Tom Jones was born on June 7, 1940, at 57 Kingsland Terrace, Treforest, Pontypridd, in Glamorgan, South Wales as Thomas John Woodward. His father Thomas Woodward was a coal miner, and his mother Freda Jones was a housewife. He joined Wood Road Infants School, Pontypridd Central Secondary Modern School, and Wood Road Junior School.
Jones started his singing career at an early age. During his childhood, he would regularly sing at family gatherings, weddings, and in his school choir. When he was 12 years old, he was diagnosed with Tuberculosis. Later he said that: "I spent two years in bed recovering".
His singing career was inspired by soul music, along with his influence by R&B singers Little Richard, Solomon Burke, Jackie Wilson, and Brook Benton, as well as Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis.
The 78 years old Tom Jones began his singing career in 1963 and he became the main singer for Tommy Scott and the Senators, a Welsh beat group. After working with this music group, he came into the limelight and released his first single, Chills and Fever. He also sang a title song in an American comedy movie, What's New Pussycat?.
