After finishing his early education from Amory High School, Harmon enrolled the University of Arkansas-Monticello, where he completed his graduation. At the beginning of his career, he learned to play the piano but later, he expanded to play drums and guitar as well.
Harmon was inspired by his friend to participate in an American reality television singing competition called The Voice, which was aired on NBC, an American English language commercial broadcast television network. At first, he sang a song "Stay With Me" by Sam Smith and he was chosen to compete with 32,000 participants. Later, he was sent to compete in Los Angeles where he sang a song "Jealous" by Nick Jonas. In October 2014, he was not chosen by any judge and his audition did not air.
In August 2015, Harmon auditioned for American Idol in Little Rock, Arkansas, and he became the first R&B singer to be selected by the judges in the season. On April 7, 2016, he became the winner of American Idol by singing a winning song "Falling". This song was written by singer-songwriter and American Idol judge Keith Urban along with Dallas Davidson and Brett James.
