As a child, Tyus was enrolled at Apple Valley. During his 8th grade, he was named a varsity starter for Apple Valley in the 2009-2010 sessions. Next year, he was selected as one of 27 athletes try out for the 12-man FIBA Americas Under-16 Championship team in the United States Olympic Training Center. In 2014, he joined Duke University men's basketball team. On 15th of April 2015, he turned professional as he entered the 2015 NBA draft and that was the end of his college career. He was the 24th overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers and then he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. On 7th of July 2015, he signed a rookie scale contract with the Timberwolves.
