Verne was raised in Austin, Texas. There he attended Austin High School and finally earned his high school graduation from there. After high school, he got enrolled at Texas Lutheran University and earned his bachelor's degree from there in 1962. While he was at Texas Lutheran University, he also played an important role in the formation of the Omega Tau Fraternity. In 1962, he joined Augustana Seminary. During his early days, he was also active in playing basketball and baseball. He also worked as a disc jockey at WOC. He began working at WFAA in Dallas as a sports anchor and that was the beginning of his broadcasting career. He also worked for KTBC. Later on, he was named the radio voice of the Dallas Cowboys. In 1967, he was hired by Cowboys Radio Network and remained with them till the mid-1980s. In 1970, he got his nationwide recognition as a sports commentator. During the early 1970s, he served as the commentator for the sports show, Bowling for Dollars, in Dallas, Texas. He worked there till 1974 and then he began working for ABC Sports. He worked there till 1981 and then he joined CBS in 1982. He worked there in 1995 and then he was hired by TNT cable where he worked for about two years. He rejoined CBS in 1998 and has been serving them as its lead play-by-play announcer for CBS Sports' coverage of college football.
