Wil Willis was born into a military family on February 13, 1975. He grew up in the military bases all over the US and lived there until his father’s retirement in 1991. He has not disclosed the name of his parents and is the only child. Willis is an American by nationality and his ethnicity is white.

Soon after graduating from high school in 1993, he enlisted in the army at the age of 18, serving with the army's 3rd Ranger Battalion on active duty for a period of 5 years between 1993 and 1998.

Wil Willis became an active-duty air force pararescueman after that and remained so until March 2007. He also enlisted in year-long reserve duty with the American Air Force from August 2007 to August 2008.

Willis started his on-screen career in 2009 with Special Ops Mission under the call sign Whiskey Whiskey. Beginning from 2015, Willis has appeared as host in the program Forged in Fire, on History Channel. Produced by Outpost Entertainment, a Leftfield Entertainment company, every episode of the series features four bladesmiths competing in a three-round elimination contest to forging bladed weapons. The winner of the show takes home $10,000 and the day's championship title.
