In 1982, Mike collaborated with CBS Sports to serve as a researcher, focusing primarily on college sports. His popularity soon started spreading wings and in 1991, ESPN tired to have him as its studio expert on college football, basketball, and the NFL. But Mike turned down the offer.

In 1987, WFAN was launched and Mike was offered a job as a weekend host for college football and basketball. After a while, WFAN had Mike and Chris Russo teamed up, and it was dubbed Mike and the Mad Dog. Mike and the Mad Dog ran until 2008.
