Donald has created ten TV series, out of which CBS' NCIS is the only airing show that also stars Pauley Perrette, Mark Harmon, and Sean Murray. It is the seventh longest-running scripted primetime TV series in the US (16 seasons as of 2018).

His third marriage came to Deborah Pratt, which lasted for six years from 1984 to 1991. Donald and Deborah are parents to two children, Troain Bellisario, and Nicolas Bellisario.

Donald was born in Cokesbury, Pennsylvania, to an Italian-American father, Albert Jethro Bellisario and Dana Bellisario. Prior to taking on the entertainment industry, Donald served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years from 1955 to 1959. In 1965, Donald served as an advertising copywriter in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In the 80s, Donald co-created the TV series Magnum, Airwolf, Quantum Leap, JAG, and NCIS.

Donald wrote and directed the 1988 feature film Last Rites. In 2004, Donald received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which was aired in the Season 9 of the JAG episode titled Trojan Horse. In 2007, Donald retired from NCIS, which had premiered in 2002. However, Donald retained the title of executive producer of NCIS.

Bellisario College of Communications.
