Alexandra Patricia Morgan is an American football player, Olympic gold medalist, and FIFA Women’s World Cup champion. She plays as a forward for Orlando Pride in the National Women’s Soccer League, and the United States women’s national soccer team.
She was born on July 2, 1989. She began playing soccer at the early age of 14 for Cypress Elite. With the team, she won the Coast Soccer League under 16-championship.
She attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she played for the California Golden Bears from 2007 to 2010. She finished her college career with a total of 45 goals, and 107 points for Golden Bears.
On January 14, 2011, Morgan was the overall pick in the 2011 WPS Draft by the Western New York Flash. It was her first professional debut and helped her team win the league Championship.
Morgan was just 22, the youngest player on the national team when she played for the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup where her team won silver.
After her contract with Western New York Flash, she joined Seattle Sounders Women in 2012. Morgan made three regular-season appearances for the club.
Alex Morgan is known for scoring the match-winning goal against Canada in the 2012 London Olympics. The ball hit the nets at the 123rd minute of the semi-final.
By the end of 2012, Alex had clean sheets to her name scoring a total of 28 goals and 21 assists. She was the only female American footballer after Mia Hamm to score 20 goals and collect 20 assists in the same year. She ultimately became the sixth and youngest player in the U.S. to score 20 goals in a single year. 2012 was quite fruitful for her career, making her the U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year and also FIFA World Player of the Year finalist.
In 2013, Morgan joined forces with club Portland Thorns to win the league title that year. She played for Thorns till the 2015 season and was then traded to the Orlando Pride. During her tenure with the Orlando Pride, she scored four goals.
In January 2017, she signed a contract with the French champion Lyon. She was offered a deal of $33,000 per month.
She was awarded the Golden Boot and the MVP award at the first She Believes Cup competition in March 2016.
She has written The Kicks, a four-book series for middle schoolers. The series focuses on the life of four girls and features themes of friendship, leadership, and soccer. She has also written other books as well, Saving The Team, her first novel followed by another, Sabotage Season.
She is married to soccer player Servando Carrasco. They got married on December 31, 2014. She met her husband Servando back in her university days.
