Talented and industrious lady, Dian Fossey was born in the early 1930s in San Francisco, California, United States of America to Kathryn "Kitty" (née Kidd) and George E. Fossey III. Her mother was a fashion model and her father was an insurance agent.

1938

Her parents got divorced

She was born to Kathryn "Kitty" (née Kidd) and George E. Fossey III. Dian was aged six years old, when her parents dissolved their married life. Then she began living with her mother. Later her mother got married to Richard Price.

Began her love for animals

She was aged six years old when she began riding horse. She also began her love for animal during that year. Her first love animal was for her first pet goldfish. This love for animals continued throughout her life.

Worked at White Front

Her step father ordered her to pursue her higher education in business but her real interest was in animals and biology. After her step father didn't provide her financial support, she began working at White Front as a clerk. She also did laboratory work, and laboring as a machinist in a factory.

1955

Began her career in occupational therapy

In 1955, she began working in occupational therapy. In 1956, she began working at Kosair Crippled Children's Hospital as an occupational therapist. Though she was shy, this behavior made her to work well with the children at the hospital.

1963

Went on a seven-week visit to Africa

Though, she denied an initial offer to join the Henrys on an African tour because of her humble financial background, she finally did her seven-week visit to Africa at the end of 1963. In September 1963, she went to Nairobi, Kenya.

Dian Fossey was a zoologist and a primatologist from United States. She was also known for being an anthropologist. At the end of 1967, she founded the Karisoke Research Center. Later on she was nicknamed by the locals as Nyirmachabelli.
