At the beginning of his career, Mark Stephen Shields worked as a lance corporal in the United States Marine Corps in Florida, before he was discharged in 1962. After that, he moved to Washington where he started working as an aide to Wisconsin Senator William Proxmire. Later he began working for Robert F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign.
After sometimes, Mark held leadership positions in the presidential campaigns of Edmund Muskie and Morris Udall. He has also worked as a political director for Sargent Shriver. In 1972, he competed for the vice-president from Democratic and helped to manage state and local campaigns in more than 38 states, like Massachusetts, incumbent Boston, Mayor Kevin White's successful re-election campaign in 1975.
Later, Mark started serving as an editorial writer for The Washington Post. In the same year, he began writing a column that is now distributed nationally by Creators Syndicate. In his entire career, he has covered 12 presidential campaigns and had attended 24 national party conventions. Currently, he serves as a commentator for the PBS NewsHour. He married his long-term girlfriend, Anne Hudson Shields, a lawyer and former civil service official at the United States Department of the Interior. The couple has a daughter Amy, a television producer. He lives a happy married life along with his spouse and children in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
