Jon started his career as a freelancer writer and broadcaster but later in 1983, he joined the BBC as a reporter for BBC Radio Solent. Soon afterward, he became the chief political correspondent for BBC News 24. During his tenure as chief political correspondent, some of the most-talked news that Jon covered in Paris are The French ban on the importation of British beefthe millennium celebrations in Paris, and the French Presidency of the EU in 2000

In 2005, Jon debuted on The Political Show on BBC One replacing Jeremy Vine, an English news presenter/journalist well-known for his own show, Radio 2 on BBC, for the post of the Program's Presenter.
