Sami started his sports career with Ykkönen, a club of the Finnish football league system and soon moved to Veikkausliiga outfit MyPa, where he played four years and helped them to win the Finnish Cup in 1992 and 1995.
After that, he joined Willem II, a Dutch football club based in Tilburg, Netherlands, where he played for next four years. While he was playing for the club, he became the team's captain and was nominated as the player of the year for his outstanding performance in the UEFA Champions League.
In 1999, he joined Liverpool, in a deal of worth £2.6 million. He began playing for this club and quickly established himself in the first team, partnering Stéphane Henchoz in defense. After some years, he became the captain of the team and in that season Liverpool won a slew of honors, completing a cup treble of the League Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Cup.
After playing several years for the Liverpool, Sami became the caption of the team in the 2001–02 season, his position later superseded by Steven Gerrard as captain; and in Steven's absence, he had led the team as a caption for several times. The current manager of the Liverpool club is Jurgen Klopp.
Sami was one of the popular football players in the Finland national team and has been chosen as the Finnish Sports' Journalists and Football Association Player of the Year several times. He retired from football career in 1992 with 105 caps, he received his caps as the second highest capped football player of his country after Jari Litmanen. After his success as a player, he became the manager of Swiss club FC Zürich.
Sami is a Finnish by nationality and belongs to white ethnicity. He married his longtime girlfriend, Susanna Rissanen, after dating her for sometimes and the couple blessed with two children Rico Nestor Hyypiä and Kasper Erik Hyypiä.
