Sissy Spacek is an American actress and an Academy-Award-winning personality well known for her roles in Carrie, Coal Miner's Daughter, In the Bedroom, and The Help.
Sissy was born on December 25, 1949, in Quitman, Texas. She is the daughter of Virginia Frances and Edwin Arnold Spacek Sr. She was nicknamed Sissy by her brothers, and she made her first stage appearance at the age of 6. She attended Quitman High School and was titled homecoming queen at her senior prom.
Spacek then moved to New York City to pursue her career as a singer in 1967, at the tender age of 17. There she started living with her cousin, actor Rip Torn and his wife Geraldine Page. She recorded her first single John, You've Gone Too Far This Time using the name of Rainbo, where she teases John Lennon for appearing nude for the album cover along with his wife Yoko Ono.
Sissy didn't have much success with her musical career and then decided to focus on acting, and got enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. She first appeared as an extra in a film by Andy Warhol, Trash(1970), and then made her debut in Lee Marvin's thriller Prime Cut(1972). In the film, she plays a teenager who gets abducted by a white slavery ring. Sissy then appeared in Badlands(1973).
In 1976, she got her breakthrough role in Carrie, a Brian De Palma’s teen horror classic. In the movie, she plays the role of an emotionally disturbed gifted teenage girl, which gained her attention from the critics and audiences. She also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role.
She has also acted in several other movies and TV shows like Three Women (1977), Heart Beat (1979). Her 1980 biopic Coal Miner’s Daughter where she portrays the role of Loretta Lynn earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Spacek also starred in her husband's Raggedy Man (1981), and her other movies include Missing (1982), and The River (1984). In 1986, she portrayed the role of a suicidal woman in 'night Mother.
Her other notable works include The Long Walk Home (1990), A Private Matter (1994), If These Walls Could Talk (1996), The Good Old Boys(1995), Blast From the Past (1999), The Straight Story (1999)
While working on Badlands, Spacek met her husband Jack Fisk, who worked as a production designer. The couple got married in 1974, and reside at the Virginia farm, Beau Val. They have two daughters, Schuyler and Madison. She is currently 68 years of age and was born in the U.S, she is of American nationality and of white ethnicity.
